Product Maintenance

Using LED lighting, Panasonic mercury lamp will be shut down by the end of June 2020.

On the 17 day, Panasonic issued a press release announcing that in order to respond to the Minamata Convention on mercury (mercury), the production of 31 mercury lamps will be completed by the end of June 2020, and the product lineup of LED lighting will be strengthened in the future to be converted to LED lighting.

The Minamata convention entered into force in the summer of 2017 and will prohibit the production, import and export of mercury lamps since 2021.

Mercury lamps are widely used in high ceilings, factories, parks and streetlights because of their large amounts of light. The LED lighting with the same amount of light is 2-3 times the price of mercury lamps, but its life expectancy is about 5 times and less than half of its electricity consumption. Therefore, the original LED lighting has more advantages.

Panasonic pointed out that after the mercury lamp is lit, it will take about 5 minutes to increase the brightness to the highest level. However, LED lighting can achieve almost 100% brightness at once.

Sankei Biz and co communications reported that the annual mercury shipments of Panasonic mercury lamps were about 200 thousand, and the market share in Japan was about 1/3. However, because mercury lamps were easy to attract the flying insects to gather (LED was less likely to have such problems due to approaching natural light), the proportion of total lighting sales in Japan has now shrunk to only about 1%. Ping. At present, some Japanese manufacturers have stopped selling mercury lamps, while Panasonic, Toshiba, NEC and Iwasaki electric are still on sale.
